About

Judith Brocklehurst is an artist who works across different media. Having studied sculpture in Norwich and Dresden, materials remain at the core of her practice. Working extensively in gallery education added aspects of performance, and social participation to the mix. Parallel to this her PhD opened up ways of understanding political monumental spaces, her practice became a research method.

In the studio she continues to develop ideas that emerged from this engagement with monumentality and historically complex public spaces. Her processes and materials are a reaction to a distrust in stone and bronze and the statues insistence in political historical certainties. The works reference plinths and human forms but also the makeshift studio furniture of turntables and armatures with which they are made. The forms made of thin plastic sheet, tissue paper or cardboard hover between solidity and flimsiness. She keeps images of crumpled bronze and exposed voids in mind as the sculptures are built, they already embody their potential end.
